//January 2020 poster challenge

For 2020 I wanted to try something new and outside of my comfort zone.

I have seen many designers do the “poster a day” challenge or the “365 design challenge” where you post something you design or make to your Instagram feed everyday.

Not only does this create an online portfolio of your work but it shows progression, increases speed and time management and if you have serious issues with perfectionism like me; to learn that my work doesn’t have to be perfect.. I just need to share and show more!

I decided to design a poster a day in January.

The areas I wanted to improve on were: layout, typography, effects and filters. I decided that I would capture thoughts, feelings, happenings, photographs, song lyrics, films, themes and general findings on my posters to create a range of innovative designs.

I did a bit of research to give me an idea of what other people have done for their challenges by looking on Instagram and Pinterest. I also found a book which I purchased on Amazon called the 365 Design Challenge by a LA based designer called Bryn Hobson.

I tagged a photo of my book on Instagram and actually received a kind message from him appreciating my support on his book and offering some advice for me:

I was feeling apprehensive and scared by this challenge.

With such a tight work schedule already I knew that the pieces I created would have to be to a very strict short deadline. I know I will struggle with controlling my perfectionism and time management. I knew that to start off with I would also struggle on the digital aspect. However I hoped that as I progressed that I would pick up skills and techniques, that I would speed up with the design process and be happy with what I created without worrying too much about the final outcome.

All of my designs throughout the month are on the slideshow on here.

Towards the end of the month I massively struggled with ideas for my posters. My daily routine is pretty much like a hamster wheel going around so there wasn’t much inspiration or motivation heading my way with the same routine day in and day out… However, I did really enjoy the challenge I set myself and I did learn new skills and layouts and you could see progression by the time I had finished the month.
